Frequently asked questions.

Will an aluminum patio cover make my patio feel hotter?

Actually, it’s the opposite. Aluminum reflects sunlight rather than absorbing it like wood or shingles. Duralum’s Monterey Insulated panels take this a step further with a thermal foam core that significantly reduces heat transfer, keeping the area underneath noticeably cooler than the ambient temperature.

How does aluminum compare to real wood?

While wood offers a traditional look, it requires sanding, staining, and painting every 2–3 years to prevent rot and termite damage.

  • Aluminum mimics the "Weatherwood" grain aesthetic but is completely immune to termites, warping, and cracking.

  • Lifespan: Aluminum typically lasts 25–30+ years, whereas wood often begins to deteriorate within 10–15 years without rigorous maintenance.

Is it noisy when it rains?

Standard thin aluminum can have a "pinging" sound during heavy rain. However, if you choose the Monterey Insulated (IRP) system, the high-density foam core acts as a sound dampener, making the patio as quiet as a standard room in your house.

What kind of maintenance is required?

Aluminum is virtually maintenance-free. To keep it looking new, a simple rinse with a garden hose once or twice a year to remove dust or pollen is usually all that’s needed. Because of the DuraTough Coating™ (infused with Teflon®), dirt and stains generally don't stick to the surface.

Can I install ceiling fans or lights?

Yes. Both the Californian Solid and Monterey Insulated systems allow for the integration of:

  • Ceiling fans

  • Recessed LED lighting

  • Outdoor speakers

  • Power outlets Note: The Monterey series features internal "raceways" to hide all electrical wiring for a clean, professional finish.

How does it handle wind and heavy weather?

Duralum products are engineered to exceed strict building codes. They are rated for wind speeds up to 130 MPH and meet Seismic Category D requirements, making them much safer than many DIY or "big box store" kits during storms. What kind of maintenance is required?

Will the color fade over time?

Duralum uses a baked-on enamel finish called DuraTough Coating™. This is designed to resist UV rays and environmental pollutants. Unlike wood, which bleaches in the sun, these covers are designed to maintain their color integrity for decades.

What is the warranty?

Duralum offers a Transferable Lifetime Warranty. This is unique because if you sell your home, the warranty transfers to the new owner, which serves as a great selling point and adds tangible value to your property
